I have been trying to convince the management at my current assignment that purchasing IDEA is a much better decision than using a free IDE like Eclipse. The budget is tight, as it is almost everywhere, and when they compare FREE with $699 they don't see the advantage of spending the money.
I personally find using IDEA to be much more productive. It also results in much more maintainable code. However, I have not been too successful at articulating that to the people who control the money. Does anyone out there have any reasonable suggestions on how to get the point across? Have there been any studies done on the return on investment (ROI) for IDEA? If I can put it into $ saved over time, it would probably help. -- TimHaley - 02 Sep 2003
I am in the same position. I am using would love to convince my office here to switch from Eclipse to Intellij, but they are convinced that Eclipse is the best tool out there. I know that when compared to the performance, refactoring abilities, and assistance IntelliJ provides, eclipse falls way behind. But how do I convince management. Does anyone at Jetbrains (specifically the marketing dept) have any ideas. I am sure they have come across this problem at a corporate level, so maybe they have the research to help out....... -- JoshSmith - 25 Nov 2005
Marketing strategy to sell more licenses.:
* May I suggest the the most apt way of doing this is as follows:
Tabulate the difference in features between IDEA and Eclipse (particularly those features that IDEA has that Eclipse doesn't)
For each feature estimate how often a developer will perform a particular function and then have two estimates, one using IDEA and one using Eclipse.
Extrapolate for a development team of X over Y development days
